Even though our work might not be the same, we are united in living-while-lawyering, especially so this year. Read on to see what has provided hope, wisdom and help to lawyers in our state, and a father (and attorney) across the country.

I am sure many end-of-2020 writings will begin with reflection back to January with disbelief at the sharp turn the world took before the end of the first quarter. While none of us needs a reminder of what this year brought and became, the reality of the various weighty experiences of the year is significant and can't be extinguished like a candle just before the dawning of Jan. 1, 2021. As I began my own reflections, I asked Georgia lawyer-friends and my father (a California

lawyer, mediator and arbitrator) about hope, wisdom and what has helped them make it through the year. Even though our work might not be the same, we are united in living-while-lawyering, especially so this year.

What Has Sustained You This Year?

Many of us have attended more virtual meetings than we care to count, yet we've found solace in virtually connecting with family and friends. We have taken up new hobbies, increased or introduced regular physical fitness, and focused more on our mental well-being. We have also tried to look beyond what we see and believe in a better tomorrow.

Arnice Foster: Two things sustained me this year. The first is that we began weekly family Zoom chats on Friday nights. Everyone was at home, including our younger relatives. It really brought us together. We had family on the phone from all over the country. We celebrated birthdays, graduations, retirements and internet business launches. We met weekly until the end of July. Now we meet monthly. The second thing that sustained me was being invited to conduct virtual fitness classes with fellow female fitness instructors who are also attorneys, which made it all the more delightful to see what inspiring instructors they are. This particularly warmed my heart. As fitness instructors, we thrive on the workout, but also on sharing the joy of fitness with our students. Fitness brings people together in such a positive format.

Jay Rollins: Clients, in particular helping clients navigate our brave new pandemic world, and feeling like I am making a positive difference for companies and workers during a very difficult time.

Monica McCullough: Hope that we'll one day (soon) look back and see we survived.
