During its regularly scheduled meeting on August 27,1999, held in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Board of Bar Commissioners received the following reports and took the actions indicated:
1.The Board approved the minutes of the July 30,1999 Commission Meeting as amended.
2. President's Report: Reviewed and discussed calendar events, Tornado Relief Project, Judicial Conference, Multi state Admission Initiative, National Conference of Bar Presidents Meeting, Appointed Convention Chairs: Maxwell Miller and H. Dickson Burton, Multidisciplinary Study Committee Update, Bar Communications Committee Update, Grant Request Procedure Committee Update, Review Appellate Court Nominating Commission, Review National Conference on Pro Se Litigation and Review ADR Committee Petition to Become a Section.
3. ABA Representatives Report: James Lee and Paul Moxley.
President's Distinguished Service Award
President James C. Jenkins presented the "President's Distinguished Service Award," to Dallin H. Oaks for his public and charitable services and many years of leadership in the legal profession.
In presenting the award, Jenkins said it "honors the virtues of scholarship, integrity and charity which Elder Oaks has demonstrated throughout his career."
Elder Oaks, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has formerly served as president of Brigham Young University, dean of the J. Reuben Clark School of Law, executive director of the American Bar Foundation and professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School. He was also a justice on the Utah Supreme Court from 1981 to 1984.
4. Judicial Council Report: Scott Daniels.
5. Women Lawyers of Utah Report: Carol Stewart.
6. Legal Assistants Division Report: Sanda Kirkham.
7. Charles R.B. Stewart III, Pro Bono Coordinator, gave a report on Judicial Involvement in the Rural Pro Bono Project.
8. Gary Sackett, Chair, Ethics Advisory Opinion Committee, appeared to review Opinion No. 99-06. The Commission approved Opinion 99-06.
9. Lunch with the Utah Minority Bar Association Executive Committee.
