This monumental work of the late Professor Jozef Deleu (1925-94), published in 1970, was reviewed by K. R. Norman in the BSOAS 34.3 (1971), K. K. Dixit in Sambodhi (October 1972), and Ernst Steinkellner in the JAOS 93.3 (1973).

As noted by J. W. deJong in his short foreword to this reprint, Deleu attempts to distinguish the nucleus of the text and later accretions by a critical analysis and commentary and detailed indexes. Although the philological and doctrinal aspects of the Bhagavat[bar{i}] S[bar{u}]tra have now become well known, we need to reemphasize the value of this work for the following comments made by Deleu, which establish the unique importance of Viy[bar{a}]hapannatti: "Here we have a record, as a matter of fact the only really...
