Despite growing concern about the effects of media violence on children, violent television shows (especially cartoons) and movies continue to be produced and marketed to them. However, a study published in Media Psychology concludes that violence does not add anything to kids' enjoyment of such programs and their characters.

Violent cartoons have been a staple of the Saturday morning programming lineup for decades and now readily are available on cable television channels specializing in children's shows, Many classic cartoons, such as those in the Looney Tunes series, have featured slapstick violence. In recent years, though, action programs have drawn much attention both because of their violent content and their popularity with young people.

It has been found by some content analyses that as many as 70% of children's television shows have violent content. Yet, the researchers have discovered that this has an indirect negative effect on whether boys enjoy a program due to how they identify with the characters. "This is good news."...
