On behalf of the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice
Section (TIPS), its ocers, Council, committee chairs
and vice-chairs, sponsors, and dedicated sta, welcome
to the 2025–2026 American Bar Association (ABA) year.
Congratulations to Immediate Past Chair Chris Nolan on a
remarkable year culminating in a memorable Section Confer-
ence in Washington, D.C., that included an incomparable gala
honoring and featuring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonya
Sotomayor, U.S. Circuit Court Judge Michelle Childs, and
our own Janet Hummons at the Smithsonian Institution’s
National Museum of African American History and Culture.
It was an evening we will never forget, and the most f‌itting
way to celebrate our 10 years of Section Conferences and over
90 years of being TIPS. Chris put heart and soul into achiev-
ing this outstanding event. Thank you, Chris.
This issue and past and future issues of The Brief highlight
some important aspects and impacts of artif‌icial intelligence
(AI) that are on everyone’s minds—whether you’ve embraced
AI (yet) or not. I also commend all of the articles in this
edition of The Brief to you.
We had an incredible panel on AI at the Section Confer-
ence in Washington, D.C., in May 2025, with Erin Cicarella,
Attorney Product Specialist–CoCounsel for Thomson
Reuters; Ginny Bonifacino, Nazareth Bonifacino Law LLC;
Melanie Bragg, Bragg Law PC; Jennifer Gibbs, Zelle LLP; and
Natasha Nazareth, Nazareth Bonifacino Law LLC, focusing
on ethically leveraging generative AI tools and providing
practical demonstrations and recommendations for internal
policies and disclosures. We had another outstanding panel at
the Fall Meeting in San Diego in October 2025, with panel-
ists Michelle Worrall, Global Director of Insurance Product
for Resilience; Helen Respass, Senior Managing Editor, Prac-
tical Law for Thomson Reuters; and Gabriel Buehler, Buehler
Law, PLLC, taking the next step to discuss practical use and
important testing and safety guardrails when using generative
AI in your organization, with emphasis on how to manage use
by employees, outside counsel, and vendors.
We are in active planning mode for our Section Confer-
ence in Austin, Texas, and look forward to seeing you then
and there—and hopefully sooner! We have some very special
local guests lined up—to be revealed soon, so stay tuned.
And we will celebrate our gala at the beautiful Bob Bullock
Texas State History Museum. Mark your calendars now for
April 29–May 1, 2026. Our Section Conference Cochairs,
Tracey Haley, Christine Forsythe, and Deb Smith, have been
working on the programming for several months now, and we
promise to deliver both fun and relevance from the Lone Star
State. There will, of course, be panels on generative AI—it is
coming up in every aspect of legal practice.
