An $18 million plant investment and nearly 400 new jobs at Evansville-headquartered Berry Plastics Corp.--which now employs more than 1,000-headline the news in Vanderburgh County, says Jim Holderread, deputy director of the Evansville Regional Economic Development Corp. The company makes injection-molded and thermoformed plastic open-top containers, drink cups and housewares.

"And our other big guys are still reliable," Holderread says of the top employers: Mead Johnson Nutritionals, which makes baby formula and other nutritional products, with about 2,400 employees; and Whirlpool's refrigerator plant and engineering division, with 2,100 on the job.
