VAN BRIGGLE ART POTTERY: At the end of the 19th century, Artus Van Briggle was the prodigal son of the art pottery industry. He worked for its foremost company, Ohio-based Rookwood, and traveled the globe perfecting his craft, ultimately re-discovering the lost Chinese art of the matte glaze. But his career path altered when he contracted tuberculosis in 1899, and the dry climate of Colorado Springs brought him west, where he opened a shop and married.
