Magluta v. Samples, 375 F.3d 1269 (11th Cir. 2004). A former pretrial detainee brought an action against federal officials asserting constitutional claims relating to the conditions of his confinement. The district court dismissed several defendants for lack of jurisdiction and dismissed the case against the remaining defendants for failure to state a claim. The detainee appealed. The appeals court vacated and remanded. On remand, the district court dismissed the detainee's first amended complaint and the detainee appealed. The appeals court affirmed in part, vacated in part, and remanded. The appeals court held that the detainee stated a claim that he suffered unconstitutional conditions of confinement and that the defendants were not entitled to qualified immunity.
