INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS BY CRIS K. O'NEALL, ESQ.

I think almost everyone who has practiced in the State and Local Tax arena in California over the past fifteen or so years has at some point met or heard about Brad Marsh.

I think that is so because of the way he is. Brad loves to delve into new areas, new challenges, new ways of handling things, and always while working with a variety of people. And the tax area, particularly the State and Local Tax or "S&LT" arena, allows for that.

But I think even before he became a tax attorney and, Brad, I really consider you to be a S&LT attorney, Brad was trying new things. Here is a brief rundown of some things from Brad's background which shows that:

  • Brad received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with Honors, from California State University Northridge in 2000. But he found the time while he was studying at CSUN to also become the Student Body President. And he didn't just occupy the position of President-he got involved in issues. For example, Brad played a role in saving four of CSUN's men's sports teams from being cut out of CSUN's budget in the late 1990s.
  • Brad worked in a number of very interesting jobs before he became an attorney. Those jobs included: working as a waiter at many restaurants, so he is a people person; being a disc jockey on an AM radio station and later working as an on-air employee at the KROQ 106.7 FM radio station; and managing a coffee, yogurt and ice cream shop business on the CityWalk at Universal Studios. I know there are many stories behind each one of those.
  • Brad also ran for and was elected a Member of the City Council of Larkspur, a position he served in from 2011 to 2013.
  • Brad even once ran a marathon. But I understand that was only once.

Brad's passion for tax was there from the start. He focused on tax from the time he began studying law at UC Hastings Law School in San Francisco, which he graduated from in 2003 with a Tax Concentration Certificate. He later served as an Adjunct Professor in the Golden Gate University Tax LLM Program, where he taught S&LT courses for ten years, from 2009 through 2019.

Most of us also know that Brad ably served as Chair of various committees within the Tax Section of the California Lawyers Association including the Young Lawyers Committee in 2007, the State and Local Tax Committee in 2009, and the Executive Committee in 2013-2014. And Brad...
