THE ORIGINS

Following our August 2003 Utah Business cover story, in which we polled the managing partners of the top 30 law firms in Utah to choose six of the state's best attorneys, we received a great, enthusiastic response--including suggestions from lawyers statewide on who else could have been included and why.

So this winter, Utah Business magazine sent out letters to virtually every member of the state's Bar, asking them: Who are the best lawyers in Utah?

THE PROCESS

We asked, "Of the Utah lawyers whose work you have observed firsthand, whom would you rate the best in each of [12] categories?"--Business Litigation, Personal Injury Litigation, Criminal Law, Labor and Employment, Taxes/Estates/Trusts, Corporate Law, Bankruptcy/Creditor Rights, Intellectual Property, Family Law, Energy/Natural Resource, Government and Pro Bono Work.

The requirements were as follows: Nominators were allowed to vote for attorneys within their own firms as long as they nominated an equal or larger number of lawyers not affiliated with their firms. The same lawyer could be nominated for more than one category, but only one lawyer could be nominated per category. Self-nomination was disallowed.

THE RESULTS

Utah Business received hundreds of responses, resulting in the following lists, which are alphabetized within practice areas.

Those attorneys who received the greatest number of votes are compiled into our Top 100.
