The Center develops and administers
orientation and continuing education
programs for Federal judges and
defenders and nonjudicial court
personnel, including probation off‌icers,
pretrial services off‌icers, and clerks’
off‌ice employees. It conducts research
and evaluation on the Federal judicial
processes, court management, and
sentencing and its consequences. The
Center produces research reports, training
manuals, video programs, computer-
based training, and periodicals about the
Federal courts; provides guidance and
advice; maintains data and records to
assist those interested in documenting
and conserving the history of the Federal
courts; and cooperates with and assists
other agencies and organizations
in providing advice to improve the
administration process in foreign courts.

The United States Sentencing Commission develops sentencing guidelines and policies
for the Federal court system.
The United States Sentencing
Commission was established as an
independent agency in the judicial
branch of the Federal Government by
the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 (28
et seq.). The Commission establishes
sentencing guidelines and policies for
the Federal courts, advising them of
the appropriate form and severity of
punishment for offenders convicted of
Federal crimes.
