Undersea Warfare Division honors awardees.

The National Defense Industrial Association Undersea Warfare Division presented its annual spring awards to Capt. Frank Unetic, Lt. Michael Reed, Dr. Harry Cox and L. John Fleischmann at the spring conference held at the Admiral Kidd Conference Center in San Diego, Calif.

The Vice Adm. Charles E. Weakley award for meritorious service and/or noteworthy contributions to effective government/industry communications in the field of undersea warfare was given to Unetic for his distinguished naval career where he made a significantly positive impact on the development of systems that are shaping the future of undersea warfare. Unetic dedicated service to the field includes all aspects of design, development and fielding of submarine communications systems and Navy information systems.

During the recent past, as the submarine communications program manager, Unetic has demonstrated exemplary service as a leader in transitioning the submarine force from the Cold War silent service to an active contributor to the global information grid and the stealth component of network-centric warfare.

The Joint Rear Adm. Jack Jarabak/ASN RD&A NDIA award for excellence in undersea warfare technology was presented to Reed for his academic achievements at the Naval Post Graduate School and his contributions to undersea warfare. Reed currently serves aboard the USS Buffalo, SSN-715.

Cox received the Vice Adm. Charles B. Martell-David Bushnell award for his 40 years of continually pushing the state of the art in advanced signal processing technology to enhance the performance capabilities that can be realized from sonar systems. The award is given to those individuals whose contributions are vital to the nation's defense.

Jean Kohlmyer Witter has provided outstanding service to the NDIA and its predecessor organizations. She has been a driving force in building the NDIA Undersea Warfare Division into the strong force it is today.
