* I liked Grace V. Jean's article in the April issue concerning the threat provided by diesel submarines. I agree that they are a quiet, difficult target for our antisubmarine warfare community. I say this having been qualified in diesel submarines and used their inherent noise advantage on many occasions. Yes, I have even been able to get dose to a carrier, but that does not qualify as "shadowing" a carrier. Perhaps a better word choice would have been interdicting as encounters between diesel submarines and carriers are usually the result of the submarine pre-positioning in an area where the carrier is expected to be operating or transiting. Having said that, it is still embarrassing when a submarine surfaces within range of a carrier if the carrier did not know it was there. So...
