IN EARLY September, a German court issued a preliminary injunction against the ridesharing company Uber, imposing a countrywide ban on its "UberPop" app until a later court hearing. Though established taxi industries have opposed Uber vehemently in several European countries, this is the first time the popular taxi service has been banned outright on a national level.

The court concluded that Uber is competing unfairly because it does not comply with insurance and licensure laws regulating passenger transport. Per the injunction, Uber drivers face fines up to 250,000 [euro] or six months in jail should they continue to offer ride services...
