The growing poverty in many parts of the world did not directly lead to 9/11,even though the globalization of the world's economy has produced clear winners and losers. It has widened the gap between the rich and poor, said G. John Ikenberry, a professor at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service.

But poverty itself didn't lead to 9/11, he said, as none of the alleged hijackers came from poor families. "But they did see themselves as disenfranchised by economic struggle and boxed in by limited opportunities," he said.
