THE OAS HAS A new assistant secretary general--Luigi Einaudi, a veteran U.S. diplomat who has played a key role in brokering peace accords in the region. He was elected to a five-year term at the 2000 OAS General Assembly--the annual meeting of the region's foreign ministers--which took place in Windsor, Canada, June 4-6.

A former U.S. ambassador to the OAS (1989-93), Einaudi has extensive experience in inter-American affairs. From 1995 to 1998, he served as U.S. special envoy in the peace talks that led Ecuador and Peru to reach a comprehensive settlement of their centuries-old territorial dispute.
