Brown v. Harris 240 F.3d 383 (4th Cir. 2001). The father of a detainee who committed suicide in a jail brought state tort claims and [ss] 1983 claims against county officials. The district court granted judgment as a matter of law to the defendants and the father appealed. The appeals court affirmed. The appeals court held that the adult detainee committed common law suicide under Virginia law, precluding the estate of the detainee from recovering on wrongful death and gross negligence...
