U. K. Agency Relies on Air Combat Simulator to Test New Weapons.

The U.K. Defense Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) has developed an air combat simulator designed not for training, but to evaluate air-combat weapon systems. The use of the simulator would help to support procurement decisions and to assist in formulating long-term research strategies, officials said.

The so-called Joust simulator consists of 12 jet pilot stations and four Eurofighter cockpits. High-resolution projection screens are used in conjunction to provide pilots with a wide field of view for visual air-combat simulation. In addition, three commander stations provide control over manned aircraft, computer-generated forces and ground-based systems such as surface-to-air missile installations.
