Two Teens Talking.

When the recent violence broke out in the Middle East (see p. 11), we thought of the two Jerusalem teenagers we spoke with for our September 18 issue: Kheirallah Bazbaz, 18, a Palestinian, and Yaara Saroussi, 17, an Israeli. Joel Greenberg, who reports from Jerusalem for The New York Times, asked them for their views of the current fighting. Here's what they said.

KHEIRALLAH: I lost a large percentage of hope. The feeling is that we are being attacked from the Israeli side. We have a right to demonstrate without being faced with tanks and live bullets. We are the victims, and the media are flipping the facts to say that we should stop the attacks and the violence. We have a right to demonstrate how we feel and to protect our holy sites. One hundred Palestinians died to defend al-Aqsa, so I don't think we will stop until there is a solution for Jerusalem.

YAARA: This shows that neither side is ready for peace, but it only strengthens the point that there is no other way. I...
