Tall and Lanky Mauricio Justus normally dons a suit, nota pair of plaid shorts, sneakers and a t-shirt. And he's not usually mud-caked and sweaty from mountain biking through a wet and wily Yucatan trail. But the sales director for Mexico's Grupo Posadas is enjoying himself, and he thinks paying customers will too. "Don't change a thing," Justus tells the tour leader, as the group arrives at a clearing to behold the rarely trodden Mayan ruins of Kohunlich. "It's perfect."

The tour is part of Posadas' new Explorean hotel segment in southeastern Mexico where "soft-adventure" activities like kayaking, trekking and rappelling are the order of the day. Tourists are made to feel like early 1900s archeologists hacking through the vines with a machete to discover a truly awesome ancient civilization.

Of course, this is the late 20th Century. An air-conditioned minivan brings guest back to the hotel, a masseuse soothes sore muscles before a gourmet meal. "We'll take care of you here;' says Justyn Mark Jones, general manager of the Kohunlich and Costa Maya hotels. "You won't pay US$6,000 to sleep in a camp, freeze your toes off...
