The recording industry is hurting. Last year's music sales dropped 5 percent from 2000, according to Soundscan, the first decline in 10 years. While rockers Linkin Park had the top-selling album of 2001 (see list below), sales were well below pest breakout hits, such as The Backstreet Boys' 1999 release Millennium, which, sold 11.9 million.
