Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson, a graduate of Creighton University, was a member of the crew of the space shuttle Columbia when it went down tragically earlier this year. From his youth, Michael Anderson had a clear-cut goal of becoming an astronaut. Each stage in his life became a creative and effective means to achieving that end. He chose a career in the Air Force as his route. After serving in the AFROTC in college, he became a pilot in the United States Air Force. Upon winning an award for his work in communication electronics, he was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, where he became a pilot for the airborne command post for the Strategic Air Command.
