Raleigh is on the grid

A Duke University report calls Raleigh an emerging hub for companies developing smart-grid technology, two-way digital communication that saves energy by letting utilities control appliances in customers' homes. Raleigh has five smart-grid companies, ranking behind only San Francisco and Redwoods, Calif. North Carolina, with eight, is third among states.
