MORRISVILLE -- Software maker ChannelAdvisor, which helps companies such as IBM and Sears sell merchandise on the Internet, plans to double its work force to about 120 this year after receiving $7 million in venture capital. Investors included Waltham, Mass.-based Kodiak Venture Partners and San Jose, Calif.-based eBay.

RALEIGH -- Gaithersburg, Md.-based software maker Global Exchange Services purchased Haht Commerce for $30 million in cash and stock. Haht makes e-commerce software. Company officials expect Global Exchange to keep Haht's about 85 employees.

CARY -- Ashburn, Va.-based long-distance phone company World-Com, which operates as MCI, laid off 70 North Carolina employees, most of them here. The layoffs, which leave the company with about 1,900 employees in the state, were part of an effort to reduce expenses 20%.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK -- In a stock deal valued at $7.8 million, Paradigm Genetics purchased Pittsburgh-based Tissueinformatics, which makes software to evaluate changes in animal tissue.
