Garage doors will lift Mocksville jobs

Amarr Garage Doors, a Winston-Salem-based maker of residential and commercial garage doors, will spend $10.5 million to open a factory in Mocksville, creating 143 jobs in the next three years. Production is to start in January. The average weekly salary will be $602; Davie County's average is $513. The company is the nation's third-largest maker of residential garage doors. It has about 1,300 employees, including 124 at its headquarters and distribution centers in Charlotte, Raleigh and Kernersville. Amarr received about $175,000 in state and local incentives.

GREENSBORO -- Johnnetta Cole, 69, will step down as president of Bennett College in June. Since her arrival at the historically black school for women in July 2002, it has raised nearly $30 million in a capital campaign, increased its endowment from $3 million to $10 million and expanded enrollment from 428 to 572.

JAMESTOWN -- Kayak maker Legacy Paddlesports received $100,000 in state incentives to open a factory here. Legacy (Tar Heel Tattler, May) was created this year when High Point resident Andy Zimmerman bought Bristol, R.I.-based Heritage Kayaks and renamed it. During the next three years, Legacy plans to hire 244 people at an annual average salary of about $38,000; the Guilford County average is $35,516.
