RF Micro aims to amp up employment

RF Micro Devices, which makes power amplifiers for cell phones, plans to spend $80 million to expand its Greensboro factory and boost employment by about 300 to nearly 1,950 by 2009. If it reaches and maintains employment goals, the company will receive $4.9 million in state incentives plus $1.4 million in city and Guilford County incentives. The jobs will pay an average salary of about $52,290, compared with the county average of $34,268. Production is expected to begin this fall.

WINSTON-SALEM -- Daryl G. Brewster, 49, replaced Stephen F. Cooper, 59, as CEO of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Brewster was president of Northfield, Ill.-based Kraft Foods' snacks and cereals business. Cooper, chairman of New York-based turnaround specialist Kroll Zolfo Cooper, will remain as chief restructuring officer. He took over in January 2005 from Scott Livengood, who quit amid slumping sales and accounting problems.

GREENSBORO -- Pasadena, Calif.-based Avery Dennison, which makes labels, highlighters and other office supplies, will start a dyeing operation here by July and employ 60. About 45 will move from a plant in Statesville that it is closing. The company employs more than 250 here making clothing labels.

LEXINGTON -- Linwood Furniture, a partnership of artist Bob Timberlake, furniture maker Lexington Home Brands and wood manufacturer Kepley-Frank Hardwood, opened with 200 employees in a former Lexington Home Brands factory here. It makes Timberlake's furniture line, which is licensed by Lexington Home Brands.
