PositionRegional Report - TriPath Imaging wins approval for screening kit collection devices - Hillerich & Bradsby buys Practice Partner's baseball equipment business - Rheem Manufacturing plans warehouse in Randleman, NC

BURLINGTON -- TriPath Imaging, which makes cancer-screening products, won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to use two more kinds of cell-collection devices with its cervical-cancer screening kits. The approval should make the kits more market-able to doctors who prefer those devices. TriPath's kit was approved in 1999 for use with one of the three main collection devices used by doctors in cervical-cancer screening. TriPath reported revenue of $53.8 million in 2003.

REIDSVILLE -- White Ridge Plastics is spending $822,000 to upgrade equipment and will add 16 jobs by the end of the year. The company, which makes power-tool cases and other plastic products, employs 85.

CLEMMONS -- Louisville, Ky.-based Hillerich & Bradsby, maker of Louis-ville Slugger baseball bats and other sporting goods, bought the baseball and softball assets of Practice Partner, which makes training aids such as goals and practice nets. Terms weren't disclosed. Practice Partner will continue to make training aids for other sports such as lacrosse.

RANDLEMAN -- New York-based Rheem Manufacturing plans to open a 180,000-square-foot parts warehouse for its air-conditioning division early next year. It will employ 40, with some jobs being filled by transfers from division headquarters in Fort Smith, Ark. Rheem makes residential and commercial heating-and-cooling products under the Rheem and Ruud brandnames.

GREENSBORO -- Arlington, Texas-based D.R. Horton wants to build 161 homes in eastern Guilford County. Plans call for 70 single-family homes and 91 town houses. Home sales should start in about a year. The estimated value of the project is $21.3 million.

WINSTON-SALEM -- Bradford Mortgage bought the mortgage division of Charlotte-based The Scottish Bank. Terms weren't disclosed. The division originated $88 million in mortgages last year. Bradford has originated $225 million in mortgages since its founding two years ago.
