In the last 200 years, many important treaties and documents have been signed in the White House. In some instances, the President has signed an agreement between the United States and another country. At other times, the United States has acted as a peacemaker and power broker between groups of nations.

For this reason, people around the world see the White House as a symbol of peace and power. All of the treaties and documents listed here were signed at the White House. Place them on the timeline of world events listed below. Write each number on the correct spot on the timeline.

  1. The Peace Protocol: Signed by President William McKinley in 1898, the Peace Protocol ended the Spanish-American War.

  2. The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty: This treaty was signed by President John F. Kennedy on October 7, 1963. All the nations who signed this treaty agreed to stop testing nuclear weapons.

  3. The Emancipation Proclamation: President Lincoln formally signed and issued this proclamation on January 1, 1863. The proclamation freed all enslaved African-Americans in the Southern rebel states.

  4. The Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty: The President of Egypt and the Prime Minister of Israel signed this treaty at the White House on March 26, 1979, ending more than 25 years of hostility between the two nations. President Jimmy Carter was praised for helping to bring about this historic agreement.

  5. The Louisiana Purchase: President Thomas Jefferson nearly doubled the size of the United States when he purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803.
