The U.S. Department of Treasury (DOT) is using the cloud to improve the submission and fulfillment of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

According to a CIO.gov blog post by Treasury CIO Robyn East, the DOT's new system, "goFOIA," features three key tools meant to improve the process of requesting and obtaining government documents:

  1. A Citizen Web Portal that allows people to make online requests for information. Before the new system, people had to mail or e-mail a written request for records

  2. A cloud-based tracking tool that allows DOT staff to manage FOIA requests and information internally

  3. A cloud-based collaborative document management system that employees can use to handle the documents they need to respond to FOIA requests
