Transportation and Warehouse Employment consists of those employed in rail, air, pipeline, road and water based transportation. This sector also includes those employed in the storage of goods and supportive operations of transportation. Preliminary data shows Transportation and Warehousing Employment as 6.44 percent of Alaska's total non-farm employment for July 2012. Alaska's Transportation and Warehousing Employment has gained 38 percent from 1990-2012, 53.82 percent greater than the overall U.S. gain of 25 percent during the same period.

Retail automotive fuel prices have seen significant variability with effects on Transportation and Warehouse Employment, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, as illustrated by the chart. The chart shows some correlation between U.S. and Alaska Transportation and Warehouse Employment with Alaska enjoying more growth and smaller declines than that of the United States as a whole. Transportation and Warehousing employment statistics for the first half of 2012 show continued employment growth and recovery from the slump in 2009-2010. In light of receding Arctic sea ice, this employment sector may see additional growth through increased resource extraction and trade route development, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and a report on Alaska Regional Climate Impacts from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
