Transportation: from Alaska to the world.
Position | ALASKA BUSINESS MONTHLY'S 2006 TRANSPORTATION DIRECTORY - Directory |
Our cover this month illustrates how much Alaska relies on transportation. Pictured is a globe of the world, with Alaska positioned at its center, and a train, plane, barge and truck encircling the globe. Without worldwide transportation connections, Alaska would be a very different state, if one at all.
Alaska is located 9 V2 hours from 90 percent of industrialized nations. Cargo arrives here, and cargo is exported from here. Air cargo is growing at a fast pace, and not expected to slow down anytime soon. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the No. 1 air cargo hub in the U.S. and cargo landings grew by 8 percent in 2005.
Alaska Airlines alone carries 150 million pounds of cargo a year (more than 30 million of that is seafood) to the Lower 48 and is now working on expanding operations through a new cargo fleet, which will increase cargo capacity by 50 percent. There are more than 35 air cargo carriers operating to and from the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
Trucking companies are also growing. ABM received a press release this morning (May 2) about Carlile expanding operations. Also, the railroad has plans under way for expansion and new development.
Trucks carry cargo from the Port of Anchorage to the rest of the communities on the Alaska road system and barges and planes ship to roadless communities. The Port of Anchorage services 80 percent of the state's geography and 90 percent of all consumer goods come through its facilities.
According to Alaska Economic Trends (April 2006 edition), put out by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, in 2005 transportation numbers grew modestly, by about 300 jobs, from 11,000 jobs to 11,100 for transportation, warehousing and utilities; and from 33,000 jobs to 33,200 for trade, transportation and utilities.
"The overall environment for the industry remained positive," the Trends report stated. "An upswing in international air cargo traffic, a decent visitor season, and a strong level of overall economic activity were all pluses for Anchorage's transportation sector."
A look at our transportation directory shows just how broad a reach our transportation carriers extend. Look through its pages. If you know of a company that would like to be in next year's transportation directory and 2007 PowerList and was not included this year, call Stacie Hamill at 276-4373, fax info to 279-2900, e-mail circ@akbizmag.com or mail data to 501 W. Northern Lights Boulevard, Suite 100, Anchorage, AK 99503.
Note: only companies that return surveys are included.
