We've all heard it. "We are within 9 1/2 hours of 90 percent of the Industrialized Northern Hemisphere." "Alaska is the transportation crossroads to the world." "The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the No. 1 air cargo hub in the U.S for landed weight." "About 90 percent of all goods that come into the state and are spread across the state go through the Port of Anchorage."

The Alaska transportation industry is huge. Most of what is purchased, built or consumed comes to Alaska by barge, train, air or truck.

"Without the transportation industry, many Alaska communities would not even be on the map," said Vern McCorkle, publisher of ABM. "The transportation industry is so large, it's hard to get your arms around it. If we were cut off from our transportation links, Alaska, as we know it, could not survive."

The following transportation directory provides a listing of most companies that operate in the state. In all, 89 companies are listed. These are not all the transportation companies in the state, but many of the major players.

"We surveyed about 125 transportation companies that have ties to Alaska, most of which have an office here," said Jim Martin, vice president and general manager. "We followed up surveys with phone calls. Only those who returned surveys are included."
