As a subscriber to The Progressive , I was happy to see an interview with filmmaker Kimberly Peirce in your August issue, but the opening paragraph was highly offensive to me. The interviewer, Vince Beiser, refers to a "young woman," who we in the trans community know as Brandon Teena, who "passes" as a man before "her buddies" find "her" out and then rape and murder "her."

Every indication is that Teena identified as male. I find Beiser's references offensive because he does not take this into account in any way, and although he uses the term "transgenderism" when referencing the film Boys Don't Cry , he does not appear to be too familiar with the topic. If he were, the least he could have done is to address the pronoun conundrum, and the best he could have done is to refer to Teena by the pronoun that Teena...
