Slow and steady wins the race! A near-extinct species of giant tortoise on the island of Espanola in the Galapagos (see map) has made a comeback--from 15 in the 1960s to more than 1,000 today. Espanola tortoises can grow up to 3 feet long, weigh 550 pounds, and live for more than 100 years.
