Toronto chapter member participates in HST event with Ontario's Minister of Finance.

Tax Executives Institute has long been a supporter of harmonizing Canada's Goods and Services Tax with provincial sales taxes across the country. For example, in March the Institute filed comments with the Canadian Department of Finance on the need for guidance on implementation (effective July 1) of the Harmonized Sales Tax in Ontario and British Columbia. (The comments were reprinted in the Spring 2010 issue of the magazine.) Among the reasons that TEI supported the HST are the efficiencies that flow a unified federal-provincial administration of the tax system.

This past summer, Winston Woo of TEI's Toronto Chapter participated in a media event with Ontario's Minister of Finance focusing on the paperwork reduction that would be occasioned by the move to the HST. Mr. Woo, who is Director, Taxations and Pensions for AGS Automotive Systems, is currently the chapter's first vice president. Although he has participated in TEI's advocacy efforts in respect of the HST, Institute procedures prevented his appearing on the Institute's behalf.
