Top Teacher: Congratulations to Merle Hopkins!

Congratulations to Merle Hopkins, recipient of the 2019 CalCPA Outstanding Educator of the Year Award. Hopkins, a clinical professor of accounting at USC, has been in that role since 1995, and has served as the assistant dean of the School of Accounting,

He received his doctorate in accounting from Michigan State University and a master's degree in accounting from Western Michigan University, Along with his teaching, Hopkins has served in senior leadership roles, including president, with Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting honors fraternity.

He is a six-time recipient of the Golden Apple Award for classroom teaching excellence by the Marshall School of Business and a prior recipient of the Faculty Award by The USC Student Senate,

Hopkins has developed distance learning accounting courses used for the USC online accounting curriculum and is an instructor in the USC intensive accounting program for non-accounting undergraduate majors seeking a master's degree in accounting or taxation. Former students note that Hopkins encourages his students to be intellectually inquisitive so they seek to understand "why" things are resolved a certain way instead of merely memorizing accounting rules, and that he cares enough about their success by following up with them to see how their careers are progressing post-graduation.

Outstanding Educator of the Year Award recipients are identified by a nomination process involving faculty, campus administrators, students and alumni. Award criteria include excellence in the classroom, mentoring, innovation in education, publishing and involvement in professional and academic societies.
