Top 250 Private Companies: construction, engineering firms top ranking again.

The top four spots in the annual ColoradoBiz Top 250 Private Companies are a repeat of 2011, once again occupied by firms in the construction or engineering fields, or both.

All four companies topped $1 billion in revenues last year, led again by Englewood-based global engineering giant CH2M Hill with revenues of $6.37 billion last year. Denver-based PM, Construction Enterprises was next with revenues of $5.6 billion, followed by Greeley-based Hensel Phelps Construction ($2.3 billion) and MINH Global, a specialist in wet-water infrastructure based in Broomfield, which boasted sales of S1.4.8 billion.

The highest year-over-year growth among firms at least three years old was achieved by Motivity Solutions, a provider of business intelligence technology for mortgage lenders. The six-year-old Denver-based firm grew sales from $252,000 in 2010 to $2.4 million last year, a gain of 870 percent.

Also of note are two temporary-housing providers. Greenwood Village-based National Corporate Housing increased sales from $15 million in 2010 to $62 million last year, a 311 Percent gain. And Denver-based Travelers Haven LLC, founded by serial entrepreneur Elia Wallen six years ago, doubled its year-over-year sales, from $10 million in 2010 to $20 million last year.

One other notable growth spurt: Maxx HD Sunglasses, a provider of affordable, high-definition sunglasses based in Monument, doubled year-over-year sales, from $2.5 million in 2010 to $5 million last year. The seven-year-old husband-and-wife business began as a street-corner tent operation. A big boost came when Max HD Sunglasses was approved as an officially licensed supplier of Major League Baseball. The company now has 55 employees and was a ColoradoBiz 2012 Top Company finalist in Consumer Business category.
