It's hard to tell the winners from the losers just looking at the ColoradoBiz list of top public companies. In some cases they are one and the same. As a group, the top 150 companies headquartered in Colorado improved revenues by an aggregate of $7.4 billion in 2001 over the previous year, a gain of 10.9 percent.

But the list also shows 78 companies that reported losses in 2001. In fact, several of the companies on the list of 150 Colorado-based companies appear near the top of rankings for both revenue producers and money losers.

Liberty Media, which split off from AT&T in August 2001, ranks as the eighth-best revenue producer, but also was the top money loser on the list with a net loss of $6.2 billion. Similarly, Qwest was the top revenue producer of all Colorado-based companies with more than $19 billion in sales, but the beleaguered Denver-based company posted a net loss of $3.95 billion. And Broomfield-based Level 3, ranked No. 14 in revenues with sales of $1.5 billion last year, is the second-biggest money loser on the list with net losses of $5.5 billion.

Overall, 72 of the Colorado-based companies reported positive net incomes in 2001. The most profitable was the financial-services company First Data Corp., which posted a net income of $287.8 million.

The ColoradoBiz Top 250 also includes a second list of 100 companies based outside Colorado that have a significant number of employees in the state. These outside companies posted aggregate revenues of $2.07 trillion in 2001 compared with $1.99 trillion in 2000, a gain of 4.4 percent. Wal-Mart stores led all companies with revenues of $219.8 billion, a gain of 14.9 percent for the giant retailer.
