COLORADO'S PUBLIC COMPANIES ARE IN DECLINE.

They are not necessarily in declining financial health: The average company on the 2005 ColoradoBiz Top 100 Colorado-based Public Companies list posted a 21.5 percent increase in revenues between 2003 and 2004.

But the number of Colorado-based public companies making a list of top performers dropped to 100 this year, from 150 in 2003, because fewer than 150 companies with significant revenues could be found in a search of Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Last year, the magazine limited its list to a Top 100 strictly because of limited space.

The rankings are based on fiscal 2004 revenues, or sales. This year's Top 100 Colorado-headquartered companies posted total revenues of $119.1 billion, compared with $97.9 billion for the companies listed last year. This year's 100th ranked company, Simtek Corp., posted 2004 sales of $14.9 million, compared with 2003 sales of $14.5 million, when it was also ranked 100.

Of the 100 Colorado companies listed in 2005, 35 posted losses in fiscal 2004, compared with 39 that posted losses in fiscal 2003.
