New Tool in Detecting Hazardous Materials.

Industrial Scientific Corporation, in Oakdale, Pa., has designed a photo ionization detector for portable monitoring of potentially hazardous organic compounds, such as petroleum or solvent vapors. The VX500 PID can be used in confined space-entry testing, leak assessment, arson investigation and hazardous-materials response monitoring, said company spokesman David D. Wagner.

The VX500 can detect volatile compounds, such as toluene, xylene and vinyl chloride, at levels as low as 100 parts per billion, using field-replaceable, plug-in detectors and interchangeable lamps, Wagner said. Use of an optional chemical filter...
