At the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS),

we aim to provide you with timely and thoughtful

discussions of issues that are top of mind in our rapidly

changing world. This edition of The Brief provides a window

into a host of very present-day topics, including cybersecurity,

insurance, and public health, highlighting both emerging

risks and legal and regulatory responses. It explores how social

engineering fraud continues to exploit human vulnerability,

while questioning the eectiveness of cyber insurance as a

tool for improving data protection. Developments in state

privacy law, particularly in Texas, reflect growing eorts to fill

gaps left by the absence of federal legislation. Shifting judicial

interpretations around class action certification reveal divisions

among the federal circuits. Key insurance law developments

include a Michigan ruling aecting tort liability policy limits.

Finally, it oers legal strategies to prevent a potential bird flu

pandemic linked to industrial farming practices.

Speaking of Texas, we are very excited for our Section

Conference in Austin, Texas, and look forward to seeing you

there April 29–May 2, 2026. The capital of Texas has grown

so much since our last Austin meeting, and spring is beautiful

this time of year. We have plenty of substantive legal and

practice area programs lined up, including the evolution of the

American jury trial, the latest developments in artificial intel-

ligence, cybersecurity, and other risks to your business, and

ethics in mediation. We will have panels of esteemed in-house

counsel, insurance company representatives, judges, and law-

yers from all over the country, including from the specialized

business courts, who are experts in their fields. You will also

hear from Tito Beveridge, founder and maker of Tito’s Hand-

made Vodka, as to how he created his world-renowned brand

and vodka right there in Austin.

beautiful Bullock Texas State History Museum on Thursday,

Tracey Haley, Christine Forsythe, and Deb Smith, and the
