The Chesapeake Bay Chapter has become the third local unit of Women In Defense around the country. The chapter--headquartered in Lexington Park, Md., near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station--already has attracted more than 40 new members for the association. Its formation was spearheaded by Jane Walter and Cindy Broyles, both of Booz Allen Hamilton, in Lexington Park.

The Iowa-Illinois Chapter was formed last year at Rock Island Arsenal, Ill. The Picatinny Chapter was established this summer at Picatinny Arsenal, in New Jersey.

Picatinny Chapter

The following members were elected to the Picatinny board:

* President Barbara Machak, from the Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Command's Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (TACOM-ARDEC).

* Vice President Barbra Thomas, from Decision Systems Technologies Inc.

* Secretary Patricia Nickells, from TACOM-ARDEC.

* Treasurer Nancy Campoli, from the BT Fuze Division of L-3 Communications.

* Vice President for Programs Gayle Pierson, from TACOM-ARDEC.

The following officers were appointed:

* Celine Allen.

* Dolcey Chaplin, from the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Defense Procurement Center.

* John Gehbauer, consultant.

* Kathy Tovo, from the Camber Corporation.

"Our programs committee is actively developing programs for the fall," said Machak. "We are looking forward to becoming a very active chapter for Women In Defense."

Iowa-Illinois Chapter

Outgoing Iowa-Illinois Chapter President Sue Crisp installed the officers for 2002-2003. They are:

* President Mary S. Adams, from the U.S. Army Operations Support Command, at Rock Island.

* Vice President Jan Masamoto, from JTM Concepts, Inc.

* Secretary Gale Smith, from the Operations Support Command's Public Affairs Office.

* Treasurer Jean Ligeno, from the Operations Support Command's Plans and Concepts Office.

At a recent chapter meeting, Brig. Gen. Vincent E. Boles, commander of the Army Field Support Command at Rock Island, praised the many national-defense contributions by women with whom he has served during his career. Boles capped his speech by presenting submitting his application for membership and dues to join WID.

The chapter recognized the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for the Operations Support Command by giving a set of dress blues to the winner, Staff Sgr. Robert A. Barlow.
