THE YEAR 2013—OVERVIEW
Oil and Energy Trends: Annual Statistical Review
Oil Production
OPEC maintained its production quotas at 30 million
bpd throughout 2013, noting that the relative steadi-
ness of prices during 2013 was an indication that the
market was adequately supplied, the periodic price
fluctuations being a reflection of geopolitical ten-
sions in a climate of increasing non-OPEC supply
and continued global economic uncertainty.
Overall, production of crude oil and NGLs in OPEC
countries fell by 0.7 million barrels per day (mn
bpd) or 1.8% compared with 2013, to 35.3 mn bpd.
Production in the OECD countries increased by 1.2
mn bpd or 6.2% compared to 2012, to 20.1 mn bpd,
while CIS production was little changed at 13.9 mn
bpd.
The slight decline in production from OPEC produc-
ing countries was offset by the increase from non-
OPEC countries and total world production re-
mained almost static compared to 2012 at 84.9 mn
bpd.
Oil Demand
World-wide oil demand in 2013 averaged 88.0 mn
bpd, an increase of 0.7 mn bpd, or 0.8%, on 2012.
Demand in 1990 was 64.5 million bpd.
Demand in the United States of America was 18.7
mn bpd, up 1.1% from 2012. The USA accounted
for 21.2% of total world demand in 2013. In 1990
USA’s share of global world demand was 26.3%.
Demand in the European members of the OECD was
almost the same as in 2012. They used a combined
average of 13.6 mn bpd, which was 15.4% of the
world total. Demand in 1990 was 13.9 mn bpd or
21.6% of total world demand.
Japan’s demand decreased by 3.1% to 4.5 mn bpd in
2013; The figure for 1990 was 5.2 mn bpd.
Natural gas production
Total natural gas production in the 12 members of
the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)
was 884.2 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2013, an
increase of 34 bcm or 4% compared to 2012. The
1990 figure for the 15 republics of the USSR was
801 bcm. The CIS’s share of world total production
in 2013 was 34%.
Gas production in the USA in 2013 was 687.6 bcm,
up 6.6 bcm or 1.0% on 2012; its 1990 figure was
504.3 bcm. The US share of the world total in 2013
was 20.6% in 2013 compared with 24.2% in 1990.
OECD Europe production was 268.4 bcm, down 7.2
bcm or 2.6% on the previous year; the 1990 figure
was 206.8 bcm. The relative share was 8.0% in
2013, compared with 9.9% in 1990.
World total gas production was 3,339.7 bcm in
2013, up 15.2 bcm or 0.5% from 2012. The figure in
1990 was 2,084 bcm.
Coal and lignite production
World combined production of coal and lignite
totalled 7,674.3 million tonnes (mn mt) in 2013, a
fall of 3,34.6 mn mt or 4.2% on 2012. Production in
1990 totalled 4,733.3 mn mt.
In the CIS, coal and lignite production fell by 6.0 mn
mt or 1.1% to 520.3 mn mt. In 1990, production for
the USSR was 628.1 mn mt. The share of world total
in 2013 was 6.8%, and 13.3% in 1990.
In the USA production fell by 15.8 mn mt, or 1.7%,
to 909.6 mn mt. The figure for 1990 was 933.6 mn
mt. The US share was 11.9% in 2013, compared
with 19.7% in 1990.
Production in OECD Europe countries fell by 41.3
mn mt or 7.2% in 2013, to 534.2 mn mt. In 1990,
these countries produced 1,047.6 mn mt or 22.1% of
world production. Their share of total production in
2013 was 7.0%.
Primary electricity production
World production of primary electricity rose by
3.3% in 2013 to 6859.9 billion kilowatt hours (bn
kWh), compared to 6,638.7 in 2012. Production in
1990 was 4,247 bn kWh.
The USA accounted for 1,292.8 bn kWh or 18.8% in
2013 compared with 21.6% in 1990. OECD Europe
produced 1,747.8 bn kWh (25.5% compared with
29.4% in 1990).
Primary energy production
World production of primary energy in 2013 was
276.8 million barrels per day of oil equivalent (mn
bpdoe), an increase of 1.8 mn bpdoe or 0.6%.
Production in 1990 was 131.92 mn bpdoe.
The USA accounted for 31.1 mn bpdoe or 11.2% in
2013 compared with 18.1% in 1990. OECD Europe
produced 13.9 mn bpdoe (5.0% compared with
11.4% in 1990).
Canada produced 7.3 mn bpdoe in 2013, compared
to 7.0 mn bpdoe in 2012, an increase of 3.6%.
