Oil and Energy Trends: Annual Statistical Review
Oil Production
OPEC production quotas remained at 30 million bpd
throughout 2012 in a climate of increasing non-
OPEC supply and continued global economic uncer-
tainty. Overall, production of crude oil and NGLs
increased by by 1.6 million bpd or 4.6% compared
with 2011 to 35.7 million bpd.
Production in the OECD countries increased by 0.7
mn bpd, or 3.6%, compared to 2011 at 20.7 million
bpd while CIS production was little changed at 14.3
million bpd.
World production totalled 87.1 million bpd, an in-
crease of 2.2 million bpd or 2.6%.
OPEC’s share of the world total in 2012 was 40.9%,
compared with 38% in 1990. The OECD’s share was
21.6% in 2012, compared with 30.0% in 1990.
The CIS accounted for 16.4% compared with 16.5%
for the USSR in 1990.
Oil Demand
World-wide oil demand in 2012 averaged 90.9 mil-
lion bpd, a fall of 3.7 million bpd on 2011. Demand
in 1990 was 64.5 million bpd.
Demand in the United States of America was 18.5
million bpd, down 2.8% from 2011. The USA ac-
counted for 20.3% of total world demand in 2012. In
1990 USA’s share of global world demand was
26.3%.
The European members of the OECD consumed
2.9% less in 2012 than in 2011. They used a
combined average of 13.7 million bpd, which was
15.1% of the world total. Demand in 1990 was 13.95
million bpd or 21.6% of total world demand.
Japan’s demand decreased by 6.3% to 4.6 million
bpd in 2012; The figure for 1990 was 5.2 million
bpd.
Natural gas production
Total natural gas production in the 12 member states
of the CIS was little changed from 2011 at 833.7
bcm. The 1990 figure for the 15 republics of the
USSR was 801 bcm. The CIS’s share of world total
production in 2012 was 25%, compared with a
USSR share of 38.4% in 1990.
Gas production in the USA in 2012 was 682.7 bcm,
up 31.4 bcm or 4.8% on 2011; its 1990 figure was
504.3 bcm. The US share of the world total in 2012
was 20.5% in 2012 compared with 24.2% in 1990.
OECD Europe production was 285.2 bcm, up 2.3
bcm or 0.8% on the previous year; the 1990 figure
was 206.8 bcm. The relative share was 8.5% in
2012, compared with 9.9% in 1990.
World total gas production was 3,336.5 bcm in
2012, up 74.2 bcm or 2.3% from 2011. The figure in
1990 was 2,084 bcm.
Coal and lignite production
World combined production of coal and lignite
totalled 9,821.6 million tonnes in 2012, an increase
of 1,104.9 million tonnes or 12.7% on 2011.
Production in 1990 totalled 4,733.3 million tonnes.
In the CIS, coal and lignite production increased by
26.2 million tonnes or 5.2% to 26.2 million tonnes.
In 1990, production for the USSR was 628.1 million
tonnes. The share of world total in 2012 was 5.4%,
and 13.3% in 1990.
In the USA production fell by 60.9 million tonnes,
or 6.2%, to 925.4 million tonnes. The figure for
1990 was 933.6 million tonnes. The US share was
9.4% in 2012, compared with 19.7% in 1990.
Production in other OECD countries increased by
52.7 million tonnes or 4.2% in 2012, to 1,307.8 mil-
lion tonnes. In 1990, these countries produced
1,395.6 million tonnes or 29.5% of world produc-
tion. Their share in 2012 was 13.3%.
Primary electricity production
World production of primary electricity rose by
1.3% in 2012 to 6,715.2 billion kWh, compared to
6,628.4 in 2011. Production in 1990 was 4,247
billion kWh.
The USA accounted for 1,231 billion kWh or 18.3%
in 2012 compared with 21.6% in 1990. OECD
Europe produced 1,690.5 billion kWh (25.2%
compared with 29.4% in 1990).
Primary energy production
World production of primary energy in 2012 was
314.0 million barrels per day of oil equivalent
(bpdoe), an increase of 18.0 million bpdoe or 6.1%.
Production in 1990 was 131.92 million bpdoe.
The USA accounted for 30.2 million bpdoe or 9.6%
in 2012 compared with 18.1% in 1990. OECD
Europe produced 17.2 million bpdoe (5.5%
compared with 11.4% in 1990).
Japan produced 0.3 million bpdoe in 2012, com-
pared to 0.5 million bpdoe in 2011.
