Over the past several years, at least three states have taken steps in significantly restricting the use of solitary confinement for everyone in prison; many others have limited the practice for vulnerable people including those who are young, pregnant, or who have mental illness.

New Jersey: In 2019, the state passed legislation limiting solitary confinement to twenty consecutive days or thirty days total in the course of sixty days. These changes were sought for years by advocates including the coalition New Jersey Prison Justice Watch (formerly called New Jersey Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement), which includes community advocacy organizations and formerly incarcerated people.
