The Risks of Adoption

If you’ve made it this far into this book I don’t see why you don’t deserve to know a crucial fact about

adoption that adoption professionals are desperately afraid to discuss publicly, and it goes like this:

Domestic adoption is so rife with fraud and scams right now that I am actually surprised when one goes

through without the birth mother “changing her mind” at the end and keeping the baby and the adoptive

family’s money.

We have spoken with adoption colleagues here in Florida who have told us that midway through the

year that we’ve been writing this book they’ve done ZERO adoptions. Oh, they’ve had cases – sometimes

15, 20 cases – but no adoptions. That means that every one of those 15 to 20 hopeful prospective adoptive

families has paid for rent, groceries, transportation, clothing, medications, utilities, not to mention legal

and agency fees, only to get that heartbreaking call at the end of the day saying, “I’m so sorry, but Barbie

canceled her adoption plan.” Recourse: NONE.

Try again? Can they afford it financially and/or emotionally? I don’t mind telling you that I would not

be able to compose myself if I were on the receiving end of that call, because not only does the family have

to find a way to move on, but they also know that the baby, who was theirs as far as they were concerned,

will now likely have a less-than-stellar life with a MUCH less-than-stellar person.

What’s worse than that? Here you go: How about if the birth mother whom you’ve been support-

ing for the past 6 months at the end cancels the adoption, keeps the baby, and then “sells” it to another

agency or family, claiming that she owes “back rent” and other back expenses? She accepts support from

you during the entire pregnancy, then places the baby with another family in exchange for a big fat check
