James Blakemore is no stranger to being his own boss. The serial entrepreneur has started and managed various ventures in countless industries over the course of his career, from radio and photography to development and real estate. His most recent endeavor is J Cubed Housing, a shipping container housing company in West Texas.
Blakemore, who lives in Midland, Texas, prioritizes his personal growth by carefully selecting who he surrounds himself with.
"Jim Rohn said don't join an easy crowd," Blakemore says. "I'm sure you've heard the old saying that your income will be the average of the five people you hang around with the most. I try to hang around with people who challenge me and people who are successful."
For Blakemore, one ongoing challenge is not comparing himself too much to those around him. "It's tough to hang around people who are super successful without developing an inferiority complex," he says. "I have to constantly remind myself that I have the capabilities to do what I've set out to do."--J.F.
