Alaska Business Monthly has been saying for years what a recent study concluded: Alaska Native regional corporations bring wealth to the state and provide jobs statewide to nearly 10,000 individuals. In fact, the 13 regional corporations are wealthier and own more private land in the state than any other sector in Alaska.
These regional corporations have hundreds of subsidiaries whose touch reaches across the state, nation and globe. Native corporations and their subsidiaries are involved in everything from services to construction to timber to telecommunications to mining to real estate and a whole lot more.
The 13 regional corporations and their subsidiaries provide economic benefit beyond compare. Take Arctic Slope Regional Corp., for example. This mega-corporation has 9,000 shareholders and 2001 revenues of $1.061 billion. Its more than 30 subsidiaries are involved in everything from energy services to petroleum refining and marketing to engineering and construction the technical services. It provides jobs to about 6,200 individuals worldwide.
Even the 13th Regional Corp., with the 5,800 shareholders and five subsidiaries, provides jobs and benefits to shareholders who were not permanent residents of one of the 12 regions of the state of Alaska at the time of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act was signed into law in 1971. Though most of the revenue does not benefit Alaska, it benefits the people it represents. The 13th Regional's 2001 revenues were $10.6 million, up from 2000 revenues of $6.7 million.
All regional corporations provide jobs, educational benefits and in most cases dividends. Combined, the 13 regional corporations provided $2.9 billion in revenues in fiscal year 2001.
