Maine lawmakers recently joined legislators in Minnesota and Montana in passing legislation requiring the removal of the word "squaw" from the names of public sites. About two dozen Maine mountains, waterways and other areas bearing the name are affected by the law, including Squaw Pond and Big and Little Squaw townships. Privately owned areas are not affected.
