The Sin of the C4 The Rise of the Bible's Negative Attitude Toward the Golden Calf By Young Ho Chung (T and T Clark, $130). Chung argues that the earliest accounts of the golden calf in Israel were positive, viewing the calf as an appropriate footstool for the invisible God Yahweh, similar to the cherubim. It was this tradition that king Jeroboam I drew on to set up his new sanctuaries at Bethel and Dan. Opposition to Jeroboam's worship centers led to the present negative picture in Exodus 32 and in the prophet Hosea.
